Install Chrome on Windows

 

Download the installation file.

If prompted, click Run or Save.

If you chose Save, double-click the download to start installing.

Start Chrome:

Windows 7: A Chrome window opens once everything is done.

Windows 8 & 8.1: A welcome dialog appears. Click Next to select your default browser.

Windows 10: A Chrome window opens after everything is done. You can make Chrome your default browser.

If you've used a different browser, like Internet Explorer or Safari, you can import your settings into Chrome.

 

 Chrome is available on phones and tablets running Android 5.0+ (Lollipop).

 

Chrome is available for: iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch, iOS 12 and up (All languages supported by the App Store).

 

 

  • Install Chrome on Linux

Use the same software that installs programs on your computer to install Chrome. You'll be asked to enter the administrator account password.

Download the installation file.

Chrome Extensions

 

To find accessibility extensions for Chrome, visit the Chrome Web Store and search for "accessibility."

 

When you find an extension you want, add it to Chrome:

 

In the Chrome Web Store, click the extension you want to install.

At the top right, click Add to Chrome.

When prompted, confirm by clicking Add extension. An icon for the extension will appear to the right of your address bar.

Caret Browsing

 

Use the Caret Browsing extension to move around a webpage using your keyboard instead of a touchpad or mouse. You can also select and move through text, and click links and other page controls.

To turn on the extension, to the right of the address bar, click Caret Browsing .

 

  • You can also turn on caret browsing with the keyboard shortcut F7. On Chromebook, the keyboard shortcut is Ctrl + Search  + 7, or Ctrl + Launcher  + 7.

If you have a Chromebook, you can also press Search + Brightness up on your keyboard to turn the extension on or off.

To use the extension:

 

  • To move word by word, press Ctrl + arrow key.
  • To move between focusable controls, press Tab.
  • To select text, press Shift + arrow key.
  • When a focusable control (like a list) requires arrow keys, exit it by pressing Esc and one of the arrow keys.

 

 

Chrome Extensions

 

Color Enhancer

 

Using the Color Enhancer extension, you can adjust the color in webpages, like removing specific colors that are difficult for you.

 

To use the extension:

 

To turn on the extension, to the right of the address bar, click Color Enhancer .

Click Setup.

Choose the row of color combinations with the greatest level of color confusion.

Move the slider to adjust the level of color correction. Choose a setting where you can see as many stars as possible with the least amount of color distortion.

When you’re done, click OK.

 

 

High Contrast (adjust or remove colors)

 

 

You can make reading text and seeing image details easier using the High Contrast extension. It has filters to adjust color contrast, flip black and white, or remove colors altogether. You can also customize your settings by website.Note: Some built-in webpages on Chrome can't be adjusted, like the Chrome Web Store, the New Tab page, and the Chrome settings page.

To use the extension:

 

To turn on the extension, to the right of the address bar, click High Contrast .

To adjust images and text on the page, click High Contrast . Under "Color scheme for [site]," select the color scheme you want.

To turn off the extension, click High Contrast  and then Disable.

You can also browse in Dark theme or Dark mode.

 

 

Long Descriptions in Context Menu (see long descriptions)

 

With the Long Descriptions in Context Menu extension, you can add an item to the context menu, then right-click any element on the page and open its long description. The extension uses the "longdesc" and "aria-describedat" attributes in HTML, which are used by some assistive technologies.

To use the extension:

 

  • Right-click on any element on the page, and open its long description.
  • To help you identify images that have a long description, add a color border:
  • To the right of the address bar, click Long Descriptions .
  • Click Options.
  • Next to "Add border to elements with aria-describedat or longdesc attributes," check the box. Your change will automatically save.
  • Close the "Options" tab.

See a site by turning off Chrome's ad blocker

 

You won't see ads on websites that have poor ad experiences, like:

 

  • Too many ads
  • Annoying ads with flashing graphics or autoplaying audio
  • Ad walls before you can see content

 

When these ads are blocked, you'll see an "Intrusive ads blocked" message. Intrusive ads will be removed from the page.

Computer

 

Turn off the ad blocker

You can change your settings to allow ads on all sites.

 

  • At the top right, click More More and then Settings and then Advanced and then Site Settings  and then Ads.
  • Turn on Blocked on sites that tend to show intrusive ads (recommended).

 

Allow ads on specific sites

 

If you trust a site, you can add an exception to allow ads on that site.

 

  • On your computer, open Chrome.
  • Go to a page you trust that has blocked ads.
  • To the left of the web address, click Lock Lock or Info Info.
  • To the right of "Ads," click the Arrows Arrows.
  • Choose Always allow on this site.
  • Reload the webpage.

Chrome removes ads from websites that violate the Better Ads Standards. The standards discourage the types of ads that are particularly annoying to people.

 

If ads are being removed from a site that you own, visit the Ad Experience Report. In the report, you'll learn about any issues found with your site and how to address them.

Update Google Chrome

 

To make sure you're protected by the latest security updates, Google Chrome can automatically update when a new version of the browser is available on your device. With these updates, you might sometimes notice that your browser looks different.

 

Get a Chrome update when available

 

ANDROID

 

Chrome should automatically update based upon your Play Store settings. You can check if there's a new version available:

 

  • On your Android phone or tablet, open the Play Store app Google Play.
  • At the top left, tap Menu  And then My apps & games.
  • Under "Updates," find Chrome Chrome.
  • Next to Chrome, tap Update.

 

 

Get a Chrome update when available

 

COMPUTER

 

Normally updates happen in the background when you close and reopen your computer's browser. But if you haven't closed your browser in a while, you might see a pending update:

 

  • On your computer, open Chrome.
  • At the top right, look at More More.
  • If an update is pending, the icon will be colored:
  • Green: An update was released less than 2 days ago.
  • Orange: An update was released about 4 days ago.
  • Red: An update was released at least a week ago.   To update Google Chrome:  
  • On your computer, open Chrome.
  • At the top right, click More More.
  • Click Update Google Chrome.   Important: If you can't find this button, you're on the latest version.
  • Click Relaunch.

 

The browser saves your opened tabs and windows and reopens them automatically when it restarts. Your Incognito windows won't reopen when Chrome restarts. If you'd prefer not to restart right away, click Not now. The next time you restart your browser, the update will be applied.
