Get started with the updated Google Maps app

The Google Maps app has been updated to help you access features faster.

We've removed the Menu Menu. You can now access features that were under Menu Menu through the bottom tabs on the Home screen and Account Circle Account Circle on the upper right hand corner.

When you open the Google Maps app, you'll find 5 tabs at the bottom of the Home Screen:

Explore Explore: Choose where to go.

Commute Commute: What to expect along your daily commute.

Saved Save place: Create lists and recall places.

Contribute Contribute: Share experiences, add info and reviews, and fix problems.

Updates Updates: Get notifications for relevant information.

Important: In select cities, you'll find Go Go instead of Commute Commute in your Google Maps app.

Features like Location Sharing, Timeline and offline maps are available in the Account Circle Account Circle in the top right.

How to use Google Maps

Use Google Maps on your computer, phone, or tablet to search, explore, and find your way around the world. On your computer, open Google Maps. On your phone or tablet, use the Google Maps app.

Get directions and start navigation

Important: In select cities, you'll find Go Go instead of Commute Commute in your Google Maps app.

Note: On a phone or tablet, you can get travel times and directions to places you might go next, like your home, job, or calendar appointments. At the bottom of your map, tap Commute Commute. Then scroll through the options that appear.

There are lots of ways to use Google Maps on your computer, phone, or tablet. Here are some things you can do.

Note: Not all features are available in all regions.

Find search results

Look for a place or type of places, find recent searches, or get directions. You'll find search results as red mini-pins and red dots, where mini-pins show the top results. To find more information, get directions, or find inside a business, click or tap any result.

Explore the map

On your computer, click anywhere on the map to get details about a place. On your phone or tablet, touch and hold anywhere on the map to get details about a place.

Measure distances between points

You can measure distances between two points.

Find traffic, transit, biking, terrain, and COVID-19 related info

You can find more information about travel routes, traffic, the landscape, or COVID-19.

On your mobile device, open Google Maps Google Maps. At the top, tap Layers Layers and then pick an option.

On your computer, open Google Maps, click Menu Google Play Store Menu Icon. Then, select an option from the list.

Find the world in 3D

To find 3D Earth view on your computer, go to the bottom left and click the square.

Find Street View

If Street View images are available, you'll find a Street View thumbnail when you choose a place on the map.

Move the map

To find more details on the map, zoom in or out. On your mobile device, you can use gestures like rotate, tilt, and zoom to quickly move through the Google Maps app.

To search for places around you and get directions more quickly, center the map on your current location.

Download areas and navigate offline

If you're going where the Internet is slow, mobile data is expensive, or you can't get online, you can save an area from Google Maps to your phone or tablet and use it when you're offline.

Note: Downloading offline maps isn't available in some regions because of contractual limitations, language support, address formats, or other reasons.

Step 1: Download a map

Note: You can save maps on your device or an SD card. If you change the way you save maps, you’ll have to download the map again.

Download Google Maps Area and Navigation Offline

On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app Maps.
Make sure you're connected to the internet and signed in to Google Maps.
Search for a place, like San Francisco.
At the bottom, tap the name or address of the place and then Download Download and then Download. If you searched for a place like a restaurant, tap More More and then Download offline map and then Download. Save offline maps on an SD card Offline maps are downloaded on your device’s internal storage by default, but you can download them on an SD card instead. If your device is on Android 6.0 or higher, you can only save an area to an SD card that's configured for portable storage. To learn how to configure your SD card, get help from your phone's manufacturer. On your Android phone or tablet, insert an SD card. Open the Google Maps app Maps. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Offline maps. In the top right, tap Settings Settings. Under "Storage preferences," tap Device and then SD card. Step 2 (optional): Save battery and mobile data You'll use offline maps, but can still use other apps with mobile data. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app Maps. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Settings Settings and then turn on Wi-Fi only. Notes: You can get driving directions offline, but not transit, bicycling, or walking directions. You won't have traffic info, alternate routes, or lane guidance. Use offline maps After you download an area, use the Google Maps app just like you normally would. Get directions and see routes Use navigation Search for locations If your Internet connection is slow or absent, Google Maps will use your offline maps to give you directions. Notes: You can get driving directions offline, but not transit, bicycling, or walking directions. In your driving directions, you won't have traffic info, alternate routes, or lane guidance. To save cell data and battery life, use "Wi-Fi only" mode. In this mode, when you’re not connected to Wi-Fi, Google Maps will only use data from the offline maps that you’ve downloaded. Before you use this mode, make sure you download offline maps. To turn on this mode, tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Settings Settings and then turn on Wi-Fi only. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app Maps.
Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Offline maps. You can select your own map to download, or view maps you've already downloaded. Rename areas you’ve downloaded for offline use
On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app Maps.

Select an area.
In the top right, tap Edit Edit.
Update the area name and tap Save. Update offline maps Offline maps that you downloaded on your phone or tablet need to be updated before they expire. When your offline maps expire in 15 days or less, Google Maps will try to update the area automatically when you're connected to Wi-Fi. If your offline maps aren’t automatically updated, you can update them by following the steps below. From the notification
In the "Update offline maps" notification, tap Update Now.
Tap the expired or expiring area on the list.
Tap Update.

On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app Maps.
Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Offline maps.
Tap the expired or expiring area on the list.

Find and improve your location’s accuracy

Sometimes Google Maps might have trouble finding where you are located. If the GPS location of your blue dot on the map is inaccurate or the blue dot is not showing up, here are some things you can do to help fix the problem.

Tip: This will also improve your search results and make them more relevant to you.

COMPUTER

See your current location on the map

On your computer, open Google Maps.
In the bottom right, click My location My location. The blue dot shows where you are. How Maps finds your current location Maps estimates where you are from sources like your web browser’s location information. Give Maps location permission in your browser To center the map where you are, you'll need to give Maps permission to see your location. ANDROID See your current location on the map On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app Google Maps. You’ll see a blue dot, which shows where you are. If you don’t see a blue dot, go to the bottom and tap Your location My location. How Maps finds your current location Maps estimates where you are from sources like: GPS: This uses satellites and knows your location up to around 20 meters. Note: When you're inside buildings or underground, the GPS is sometimes inaccurate. Wi-Fi: The location of nearby Wi-Fi networks helps Maps know where you are. Cell tower: Your connection to a cellular network can be accurate up to a few thousand meters. Turn on high-accuracy mode To help Google Maps find your location with the most accurate blue dot, use high-accuracy mode.
On your Android phone or tablet, open the Settings app Settings.
Tap Location.
At the top, switch location on.
Tap Mode and then High accuracy.

Write reviews and add ratings of places

On Google Maps, you can write reviews for places you’ve visited. You can also leave info about a place, like if it’s quiet, lively, or romantic. These reviews and opinions are voluntary. We don’t pay reviewers for adding them to Google Maps.

What others will see

All reviews are public, so anyone can see what you write. You can’t add an anonymous review.

Notes:

Google uses automated spam detection measures to remove reviews that are probably spam.
Google has no tolerance for fake reviews. We may take down any review that we think is fake or that doesn’t follow Google's review policies.

On your computer, open Google Maps and make sure you're signed in.

Search for a place.

On the left, scroll down and click Write a review.

In the window that appears, click the stars to score the place. You can also write a review.

Your review will be visible in Google Maps until you take it down. After your review is published, you can edit what you wrote, or change the rating and pictures you included.

Notes:

Reviews are automatically processed to find inappropriate content (such as obscene, offensive, or meaningless language). They’re also automatically scanned for spam (like messages sent by bots or repeated content posted multiple times or from multiple accounts).
Google has no tolerance for fake reviews. We may take down reviews that are flagged as fake or in violation of Google's review policies. We also do so to comply with a legal obligation.

On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app Maps.
Search for a place or tap it on the map.
At the bottom, tap the place's name or address.
At the top, tap Reviews.
Scroll down until you see 5 empty stars.
Tap the stars to score the place. You can also write a review.

Your review will be visible in Google Maps until you take it down. After your review is published, you can edit what you wrote, or change the rating and pictures you included.
