तीर्थयात्रा हिंदू संस्कृति का अभिन्न अंग है। तीर्थों के लिए 'तरति पापदिक यस्मात' अर्थात 'तीर्यते अनने' कहा गया है, अर्थात् जिसके द्वारा उद्धार हो।

देवभूमि उत्तराखण्ड ऋषि-मुनियों की तपोभूमि है। यहाँ की सुरम्य पर्वत के मध्य स्थित चार धामों-यमुनोत्री, गंगोत्री, केदारनाथ एवं बद्रीनाथ की यात्रा को मोक्षदायिनी माना गया है। पूर्वकाल में चारधाम यात्रा, देश के विभिन्न भागों से श्रद्धा के साथ ऋषिकेश से पैदल चलकर पूर्ण होती थी। कई श्रद्धालु तो इसको मोक्ष यात्रा मानकर, यात्रा के दौरान ही प्राण त्यागकर मोक्ष प्राप्ति की अभिलाषा करते थे। किन्तु समय व्यतीत होने के साथ-साथ विकास का दौर प्रारंभ हुआ और सड़कों के निर्माण से चारधाम यात्रा अत्यंत सुगम हो गई।
शास्त्रों के अनुसार चारधाम यात्रा यमुनोत्री से आरंभ होकर गंगोत्री, केदारनाथ एवं बद्रीनाथ धाम के दर्शन के पश्चात समाप्त होती है। धार्मिक मान्यता यह भी है कि चार धाम यात्रा तभी पूर्ण मानी जाती है, जब पंचकेदार, पंचबद्री एवं पंचप्रयागों का दर्शन व स्नान पूर्ण हो जाता है। ये चारों धाम असंख्य आस्थावान जनों के लिए श्रद्धा एवं प्रेरणा के केंद्र बने हुए हैं।

In the year 2020 Chardham yatra starts from 29 April 2020. The priests after calculating through the Panchang hindu calender decided the dates.

Badrinath Temple : (15-May-2020 to 25-Oct-2020) The opening date is Basant Panchmi and closing date will be on Vijayadashmi.

Kedarnath Temple : The opening dates decided on the day of Maha Shivratri opens from 29 April and the closing date will be on Bhai Dooj.

Yamunotri Temple : Yamunotri Dham opening date Akshay Tritya 26 April 2020 and The closing data for the pilgrims are on the day of Bhai Dooj, 16 Nov 2020.

Gangotri Temple : Gangotri Temple gates opening date is Akshay Tritya 26 April 2020 and will be closed on the next day of Dipawali 15 Nov 2020.

Story Behind Char Dhams of Uttarakhand

The Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, collectively known as Char Dham. These pilgrimage centers draw the maximum numbers of pilgrims each year, thus becoming the most important hubs of religious travel in the whole of Northern India. Traditionally, the pilgrimage begins from the West and ends in the East. Thus, the Char Dham Yatra commences from Yamunotri, then proceeding to Gangotri and finally to Kedarnath and Badrinath.

The Yamunotri shrine is dedicated to the Goddess Yamuna who goes along the pilgrims to the high altitudes of the picturesque Rawai Valley. It is believed that a bath in the waters of the Yamuna protects the devotee from untimely death.

The Gangotri shrine is dedicated to the Goddess Ganga. The shrine overlooks the River Bhagirathi, another name of River Ganga – the name having been derived from the myth of the ancient King Bhagirath’s penance that succeeded in bringing her upon the earth from the heaven.

The Kedarnath Shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is also a part of the Panch Kedar. It is the northernmost Jyotirlinga and is close to the source of the holy River Mandakini.

The Badrinath shrine is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is situated on the bank of the River Alaknanda. According to legend, Lord Vishnu meditated here while his consort Lakshmi took the form of a berry (Badri) tree to offer him shade.
